I wanted to include some positive news that has nothing to do with COVID. Check out this article from the UNH Extension. UNH Researchers Track Success of New England Cottontail Reintroduction “Researchers with the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of New Hampshire have been monitoring an effort to reintroduce New England cottontails raised in captivity into the wild. Using DNA to track the survival and reproduction of the rabbits, the researchers found the reintroduced rabbits survived and bred in the wild over multiple years.” ~ Steve

New Hampshire to offer online boater safety certificate

It is about time. I have been trying to convince DoS to do this for years, since you can get an online course and certificate from other states which will fulfill your NH requirement anyway. ~ Steve

Memorial Day

I have a favor to ask. If you have found yourself saying “Happy Memorial Day”, please don’t. I know you mean well, but it is important to remember why we celebrate this day, a day of recognition and mourning.

“Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.

The ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns.” ~ https://www.va.gov/opa/speceven/memday/history.asp

Think about that meant, the commander of Union forces and his wife presided while both Union and Confederate graves were decorated. It was time of setting differences aside for a great purpose. This should be the lesson we receive from Memorial Day while expressing our gratitude to those who gave all for us, and the families they leave behind. Thank you veterans and your families. ~ Steve

Seacoast Online: Play ball! NH to allow baseball, other no-contact sport practices

baseball-600x300While youth sports families are frustrated with a city order closing playing fields through Labor Day, Gov. Chris Sununu announced Friday that no-contact sports practices are now allowed on playing fields, for up to 10 players maintaining social distancing.

Mayor Rick Becksted said Friday the city has to follow state guidelines because New Hampshire isn’t a home rule state. Because Sununu green-lighted practicing on sports fields, he said, “We’re going to make it happen here, period.””

WMUR: Out-of-staters encouraged to stay home over holiday weekend

“Instead of encouraging tourism over the Memorial Day weekend, New Hampshire’s governor is urging people to stay home.

Normally, the parking lot of the Hooksett rest area on I-93 North would be full by noon on a Friday before a holiday weekend. But there were a lot of empty spaces and a lot less traffic on the state’s roads.”
