Politics aside…
Next week, you will go to the polling places, cast your votes, and it will all be over for a couple of years. Don’t wait for President Obama, or President Romney to fix our economy. Government’s only assured role is that they can make it harder or easier to create jobs. The actual power ultimately lies with you. Please look for goods made here in America when you shop. You can find socks, toothpaste, and other items that you buy periodically that don’t cost much, and are made by American workers. Just think, if you can make 50 cents making a pair of socks, and next week 50 million Americans go out and buy a pair, that is 25 million dollars pumped back into American companies. The uptick in demand may create some overtime for our neighbors just in time for Christmas. If you do it again the next time you buy, the companies will react to the increased demand by hiring more workers. You really can make a difference. We just have to take a minute to read some labels. I’ve heard people say that they can’t afford to buy American, so they have to buy the Chinese goods. I disagree. Everyone can make one small step. Don’t do it all, but do what you can. Remember this famous quote – “I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything; but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” Please don’t refuse. The next time you are at the store, go out of your way to find something to buy that was made in the USA, and put an American back to work.

It is hard to believe that on the anniversary of the historic “Snowtober” of 2011, we are preparing for another possible historic storm. PSNH is already in preparation mode and we are among many utilities along the East Coast keeping an eye on the forecast. Power outages in the region appear likely early next week if Hurricane Sandy develops and tracks in the manner that some meteorologists are predicting.
In order to prepare, a number of local contractor crews have already been secured, and the company is working to retain additional line workers and support staff. We have 100 contracted tree trimming crews who will be pre-staged at our area work centers and satellites by Friday p.m., and ready to go by Sunday.
As you know, we have some customers who are medically required to have electricity at all times. We have made electronic calls to those customers today and will electronically call all other customers to warn them to take the necessary steps to prepare for extended power outages. While electric utilities like PSNH work around-the-clock to restore service when power outages occur, it is also important that families and individuals consider how they will respond, especially in the event of a major event that lasts for several days. Please warn your families and constituents to obtain fresh fuel for generators, ensure a full gas tank and other useful supplies.
